Direct Energy team hits the rolling hills of Nordegg, Alberta at Camp Alexo!

Two days at Camp Alexo?! Yes please! How could we refuse two-days of hard work in the beautiful Alberta community of Nordegg, under the brilliant stars, away from the hustle of the city and with people that make the wilderness feel like home?

Camp Alexo was established in 1984, with its sight set on providing underprivileged kids in the central Alberta area the opportunity to experience summer camp. “We are proud to say, in all our years, we have never once refused a kid the opportunity to experience camp!” states John Johnston, former camp director and current community engagement coordinator.

Camp Alexo is part of Youth HQ in Red Deer, Alberta. Youth HQ oversees both Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Boys and Girls Club of Red Deer & District. At Camp Alexo, kids are given the opportunity to not only take part in rock climbing, canoeing, hiking, fishing and much more, they are able to build relationships with other campers and camp counselors that last a lifetime. This summer, the impacts of COVID-19 prevented the camp from operating its typical camper programs. Instead, they’ve been working hard with the help of volunteers on projects that will benefit the camp and its campers for years to come.

When we heard Camp Alexo was in need of some TLC, we couldn’t turn away from giving back to an organization that puts its heart and soul into positively impacting the lives of young Albertans. With a few restoration projects on their list, we gathered a group, rolled up our sleeves and headed out to camp!

Within two days we were able to help demolish an old woodshed, move and reload their new and improved woodshed, assist with framing their brand-new tool shed, repair the lattice on their main house and start the initial steps for their fire safety initiative.

Our hard work doesn’t come close to the effort and dedication the people at Youth HQ put in every year to make this camp possible. At Direct Energy and Direct Energy Regulated Services, we are incredibly honoured to have partnered with such a caring and respectable organization and we look forward to continuing building our relationship with people that make us proud to be a part of the Alberta community.
